Costa Blanca Golf
Playing golf in the Costa Blanca guarantees sun and satisfaction, whatever the scorecard says. Here are the best courses to tee off at...
Just as the weather begins to turn in the UK, the Costa Blanca soaks in the autumn sun – the best chance for a golfing break in ideal conditions! And what better excuse? Early spring and autumn are the perfect window for a round or two in the sun!
There are 22 golf clubs in the Costa Blanca – including three pitch-and-putt courses, if you are just getting started. But most are the professional standard one would expect from a golfing nation.
World champions Seve Ballesteros and José María Olazábal have both played a hand in designing some of the region’s courses, as has the great Jack Nicklaus. But which to choose?
Ballesteros once quipped he’d like to see more narrow fairways on golf courses, “Then everyone would have to play from the rough – not just me.”
The Spanish champion was certainly used to getting himself out of tricky situations, but for the holiday golfer, the hardest part is knowing where to begin. Because the Costa Blanca’s courses are so close to each other, it is very easy to play at two or three, even on a short break.
For a starter round, it is hard to beat Alicante Golf, designed by Ballesteros himself. This 72-par championship course is often named as a favourite, partly for the water features skirting 12 of the 18 holes. Hire a car if you want to play one of Ballesteros’ other courses, Peraleja, inland to the south.
It is not just players who given fame to the Costa Blanca; venerable courses such as Villamartin helped to establish the region’s golfing scene. Since 1972, Villamartin has hosted the likes of José María Olazábal, Ian Woosnam and Sam Torrance, and has become internationally famous itself. The 17th hole in particular – a notoriously tricky par three – has tested many of the game’s best. But the region is not resting on its laurels: new courses are still being built, most recently Puig Campana Paraiso Natural, to the south of Benidorm, which opened in 2018.
Our personal favourite would of course be where our head office is located at La Finca Golf, and another personal favourite would be the beautiful Golf Resort of Font del Llop, situated slightly north of Elche.
